What is an aspect ratio visualizer?
An aspect ratio visualizer shows the proportional shape of different width-to-height ratios. This tool lets you compare formats such as 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 1:1 and 9:16 using overlays or side-by-side views, so you can see how their width and height differ, rather than only reading two numbers. As an aspect ratio comparison tool, it replaces manual math with an instant visual answer.
How to use the aspect ratio visualizer
- Set Ratio A and Ratio B: type a ratio directly (for example 16:9), enter pixel dimensions, or pick a preset.
- Choose a comparison view: Overlay centres both shapes on top of each other; Side by side places them next to each other.
- Pick what stays constant: Same Height or Same Width, depending on what you are actually comparing.

Compare aspect ratios visually
Two ratios can look very different even when the numbers seem close. 16:9 and 4:3 are both common video formats, but overlaying them at the same height shows exactly how much wider 16:9 really is. The overlay view centres both shapes on the same point; the side-by-side view places them next to each other so their proportions are easier to judge independently.
How aspect ratio comparison works
Aspect ratios describe a shape, not a size. 16:9 could be a 1920×1080 video or an 854×480 one, and the shape stays identical. Because of this, comparing two ratios only makes sense once you fix one dimension: either the height or the width. This tool always states which dimension is held constant, so a result like “33% wider” is never left ambiguous.
Same height vs same width
Same Height compares two ratios as if they were both scaled to the same height, showing how much wider or narrower one is than the other. Same Width does the reverse, comparing height at a fixed width. Use Same Height when comparing formats that share a display height, such as two video resolutions on the same screen. Use Same Width when comparing formats that share a page or column width, such as two print or social media layouts.
Content fit, letterboxing and pillarboxing
Content Fit mode shows how one ratio behaves when placed inside a frame of a different ratio, which is what actually happens when you play a video or place an image in a layout with a different shape.
- Fit / Contain: scales the content so it fits entirely inside the frame with no cropping. Unused space appears as bars: horizontal bars top and bottom are letterboxing, vertical bars left and right are pillarboxing.
- Fill / Crop: scales the content to fill the frame completely, cropping whatever does not fit. No bars appear, but part of the content is cut off.

What does an aspect ratio visualizer actually show?
It shows the proportional shape of two aspect ratios side by side or overlaid, so you can see how their width and height compare instead of only reading two numbers like 16:9 and 4:3.
What is the difference between Overlay and Side by Side?
Overlay centres both ratios on the same point so you can see exactly how much wider or narrower one is at a glance. Side by side places them in separate panels, which is often clearer when comparing very different shapes such as a landscape and a portrait ratio.
Why does the comparison change when I switch Same Height to Same Width?
Aspect ratios describe a shape, not a fixed size, so a percentage difference only makes sense once one dimension is held constant. Same Height fixes the height and compares width; Same Width fixes the width and compares height. Switching between them answers two different real-world questions.
What is the difference between letterboxing and pillarboxing?
Letterboxing adds black bars above and below content, which happens when wider content is fitted into a taller frame. Pillarboxing adds bars on the left and right, which happens when taller content is fitted into a wider frame. Both appear in Content Fit's Fit/Contain mode, and the tool labels which one applies to your current comparison.
Does Fill/Crop lose part of my content?
Yes. Fill/Crop scales content to cover the entire frame with no bars, which means anything that does not fit within the frame's edges is cropped away. The tool shows an estimated percentage of content lost so you can judge whether cropping is acceptable for your use case.
Can I share a specific comparison with someone else?
Yes. Select “Copy comparison link” to copy a URL containing your current ratios, view and comparison mode. Opening that link loads the exact same comparison.
