General Aspect Ratio

How is aspect ratio calculated?

Aspect ratio is calculated by dividing the width by the height of an image or video, then simplifying that ratio to its lowest terms.

The Formula:

Aspect Ratio = Width ÷ Height

Step-by-Step Calculation:

  1. Get your dimensions: For example, 1920 pixels wide x 1080 pixels tall
  2. Divide width by height: 1920 ÷ 1080 = 1.777...
  3. Find the greatest common divisor (GCD): The GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120
  4. Divide both numbers by the GCD:
    • Width: 1920 ÷ 120 = 16
    • Height: 1080 ÷ 120 = 9
  5. Result: 16:9 aspect ratio

Quick Example:

  • 1920 x 1080 = 16:9
  • 1280 x 720 = 16:9 (same ratio, different size)
  • 3840 x 2160 = 16:9 (4K resolution, still 16:9)

You can also express aspect ratios as decimals. Simply divide the first number by the second: 16 ÷ 9 = 1.78 (often written as 1.78:1).

Our calculator does this math automatically, just enter your width and height to get the aspect ratio instantly.
