General Aspect Ratio
How to calculate aspect ratio from width and height?
Calculating aspect ratio from dimensions is straightforward:
Basic formula:
Aspect Ratio = Width ÷ Height
Step-by-step process:
- Divide width by height: 1920 ÷ 1080 = 1.777...
- Simplify to common ratio: 1.777... ≈ 16:9
- Or find the GCD (Greatest Common Divisor):
- Width: 1920
- Height: 1080
- GCD: 120
- Simplified: (1920÷120):(1080÷120) = 16:9
Examples:
- 1280×720 → 1280÷720 = 1.78 → 16:9
- 1080×1080 → 1080÷1080 = 1.0 → 1:1 (square)
- 3840×2160 → 3840÷2160 = 1.78 → 16:9
- 2560×1080 → 2560÷1080 = 2.37 → 21:9 (ultrawide)
- 1080×1920 → 1080÷1920 = 0.56 → 9:16 (vertical)
Finding the GCD (Greatest Common Divisor):
For 1920 × 1080:
Method 1 - Factor both numbers:
- 1920 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 5
- 1080 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 5
- Common factors: 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 = 120
- Result: 1920÷120 = 16, 1080÷120 = 9 → 16:9
