General Aspect Ratio
How to calculate aspect ratio from pixels?
Pixel dimensions and physical dimensions work identically for aspect ratio:
Process:
- Identify pixel dimensions: e.g., 2560×1440 pixels
- Apply the formula: Width ÷ Height = 2560 ÷ 1440 = 1.78
- Simplify:
- Find GCD of 2560 and 1440 = 80
- (2560÷80):(1440÷80) = 16:9
Common pixel dimensions and their ratios:
- 1920×1080 px = 16:9
- 1280×720 px = 16:9
- 1024×768 px = 4:3
- 1080×1080 px = 1:1
- 3840×2160 px = 16:9 (4K)
- 2560×1440 px = 16:9 (1440p)
- 2560×1080 px = 21:9 (ultrawide)
- 1920×1200 px = 16:10
The calculation is the same whether you're working with pixels, inches, or centimeters.
Why Pixels = Aspect Ratio:
Aspect ratio is a proportion, not an absolute measurement. It doesn't matter if your dimensions are:
- 1920 pixels × 1080 pixels
- 1920 inches × 1080 inches
- 1920 centimeters × 1080 centimeters
All result in the same 16:9 aspect ratio because the relationship between width and height is identical.
Step-by-Step Example:
Finding aspect ratio for 2560×1440 pixels:
Step 1: Write down dimensions
- Width: 2560 pixels
- Height: 1440 pixels
Step 2: Divide width by height
- 2560 ÷ 1440 = 1.777...
Step 3: Recognize common ratio
- 1.777... = 1.78:1 ≈ 16:9
Or calculate precisely:
- Find GCD of 2560 and 1440 = 80
- 2560 ÷ 80 = 32
- 1440 ÷ 80 = 18
- Simplify: 32:18 = 16:9
Quick Reference Table:
| Pixel Dimensions | Aspect Ratio | Common Name |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080 | 16:9 | Full HD, 1080p |
| 2560×1440 | 16:9 | 1440p, 2K |
| 3840×2160 | 16:9 | 4K, UHD |
| 1280×720 | 16:9 | HD, 720p |
| 1024×768 | 4:3 | XGA |
| 1080×1080 | 1:1 | Instagram square |
| 2560×1080 | 21:9 | Ultrawide |
